The Investigative Judgment of Dan. 8:14 (Part Two of Four)
We have seen in Part One The Investigative Judgment of Dan. 8:14 (Part One of Four) that the 2300 years prophecy began in 457 BC with the decree to Israel to restore and build Jerusalem given by King Artaxerxes. This prophecy has two main divisions. The first part lasts 70 weeks (70 x 7 = 490 days) which are 490 years. The second past runs for the remaining 1810 years but both periods together add up to 2300 years.

Dan. 9:24 says “Seventy weeks [70 x 7] are determined [cut off or marked out] upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.”
We have already seen that a day represents a year. Since 457 BC starts off the time prophecy 490 years would end in 34 AD. These 490 years or seventy weeks as the Bible symbolically calls them delineated the probation that Israel got from God to make an end of sins. This part of the prophecy is “determined” meaning “marked out” or “cut off.” That is the period that deals especially with the Jews.
Jesus Himself alluded to this when Peter asked how long should one forgive.
Matt. 18:21,22 says:
“Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.”
Although this was meant in the symbolic sense of infinite forgiveness, it was used literally in Dan. 9 for they were given 70 x 7 years to repent.
Let us look at the first two segments of the prophecy:
(1) 457 BC to 408 BC (7 weeks = 49 days = 49 years)
The first part of the 2300 years prophecy starts in 457 BC and ends in 408 BC. According to the first part of the prophecy there would be 7 weeks i.e 49 years between the decree and the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem.
Dan. 9:25 says “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.”
In 408 BC the walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt. There are exactly 49 years from the 457 BC decree to the walls being rebuilt in 408 BC! Read the books of Ezra and Nehemiah and you will be convinced that this happened in troublous times as the prophecy stated. The prophecy was very accurate! Bear in mind that God revealed this part of the prophecy to Daniel more than a hundred years before it happened.
(2) 408 BC to 27 AD (62 weeks = 434 days = 434 years)
The second part of the 2300 years prophecy starts with the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem and ends with the Messiah and His anointing. Remember Dan. 9:25 says “from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks ….”
We have seen that the “7 weeks” (49 years) reach from 457 BC to 408 BC and another “62 weeks” take us to 27 AD, the year that Jesus was baptized. Matt. 3:16, 17 says:
“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
The Holy Spirit resting on Jesus’ head just as the tongues of fire rested on the disciples’ heads three and a half years later at Pentecost, was the anointing of Jesus, the Most Holy. When Jesus started His ministry He went into the synagogue and stood up to read. Luke 4:18 shows that He read from Isa. 61:1 onwards saying:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised …” Then in verse 21 He said “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears” referring to Himself.
Each part of the 2300 years prophecy demonstrates the amazing accuracy of the prophetic visions given to Daniel. In Part Three of this series we will look at the third segment of the 2300 years prophecy which deals with Jesus and the end of the 490 years probation.
