The Investigative Judgment of Dan. 8:14 (Part Four of Four)
Part Four of this series on the 2300 years prophecy commences from 34 AD which is the end of the seventy prophetic weeks of Dan. 9, in reality – 490 years. The prophecy deals with 2300 years so if we have looked at 490 years already there must only be 1810 years more of that period stretching from 34 Ad to 1844 AD! We can add it another way. Add 2300 years to the confirmed starting point of the Autumn of 457 BC – the decree of Artaxerxes to restore and rebuild Jerusalem and we get 1844. Add 1 year as you cross over from BC to AD since there is no 0 AD. Yes, you will get the Autumn of 1844 AD not 1843.
What happened in 1844 which is 2300 years after the starting point? Let us look at the prophecy again.

Dan. 8:14 says:
“And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred [2300] days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.”
So, according to the message that God gave Daniel, the sanctuary was cleansed in the Autumn of 1844! But the Bible is even more specific than that. Lev. 16 tells us that it was on the Day of Atonement that the sanctuary was cleansed. It says:
“29 And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:
30 For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.
32 And the priest, whom he shall anoint, and whom he shall consecrate to minister in the priest’s office in his father’s stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy garments:
33 And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar, and he shall make an atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation.”
Read Lev. 16 to see all that that Day of Atonement entailed. Read also Lev. 23.
Some may object to this and say that the system of sacrifices ended with the crucifixion of Jesus. In that they are partly right – only partly so. The earthly sanctuary was no longer of significance after Jesus’ crucifixion but remember that that earthly sanctuary was only a mirror of the Heavenly sanctuary.
Note the following points:
(1) The earthly sanctuary was made after the pattern that God gave Moses of the Heavenly sanctuary.
Read Heb. 9:22-28; Heb. 8:5; Ex. 25:9,40; Num. 8:4. I will just quote Heb. 9:23,24 which says:
“It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.”
(2) Jesus is called a High Priest AFTER He resurrected although the earthly round of sacrificing lambs ceased
Heb 4:14 says “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.”
Heb 6:20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
Heb 8:1,2 “Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.”
Heb 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building.”
(3) The Temple is STILL mentioned a few times in Revelation as well as some of the furniture that resides in the Heavenly Sanctuary.
Rev. 11:19 “And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.”
Rev. 14:17 “And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.”
Rev. 15:5 “And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened.”
It is based on all the calculations of the 2300 years prophecy of Dan. 8:14, Dan. 9 and the details of Lev. 16 and 23 that William Miller, the American Baptist, knew that the sanctuary would be cleansed on October 22nd 1844 which was the 10th Jewish day of the 7th Jewish month as well as the 2300th year of the prophecy. He thought that the earth was the sanctuary so he mistakenly thought that meant that Jesus would return on that date. He did not realize that the cleansing of the sanctuary was to take place in Heaven and not on earth. It was the beginning of the Judgment of the righteous dead. (See Rev. 11:18; 1 Peter 4:17) This is called the “Investigative Judgment” by Seventh-day Adventists since God merely investigates the cases of mankind. He does not at this time execute judgment by calling the righteous to Heaven or raining Hell-fire on the wicked. For further details on that see The Millennium Collection (When The Righteous Go Home) which deals with Rev. 20. See also What Happens When a Person Dies? Part One of Four and the rest of that series to clarify questions on what happens when a person dies. Let us not throw out the baby with the bathwater. The 1844 date and surrounding calculations were all right although William Miller misunderstood what the last part of the prophecy pointed to. He that readeth let him understand.
