The Top Ten Things The Bible Says About Egypt
With the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after massive protests Egypt was astir. Egypt is one of the oldestkingdoms mentioned in the Bible. Not many countries boast the colorful history that Egypt had in the Bible. Let us look at the top ten things that the Bible tells us about Egypt.
(1) Abraham feared that the Egyptians would kill him and take his beautiful wife so he said that she was his sister which was only half true. (See Gen. 12:12)
(2) Ishmael is the father of the Arabs and the Muslims. His mother, Hagar, was an Egyptian maid of Sarah, Abraham’s wife. When Sarah could not have children she gave Hagar to Abraham so he would have a child and Hagar bore Ishmael. (See Ex. 25:12).
(3) Joseph’s brothers sold him to Ishmeelites and Midianites who sold him as a slave to an Egyptian captain named Potiphar. (See Gen. 39:28,35)
(4) It was Egypt that helped save Jacob and his family and many of the countries of the world as God helped Joseph to provide for Egypt due to God’s visions to him warning of seven years of plenty and seven years of famine. Joseph was able to stock up goods in anticipation of the hard times. Ex. 41:57 says “And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands.”
(5) The Bible book of Exodus commemorates Israel’s departure from Egypt after being enslaved there for a few hundred years. Their crossing of the Red Sea on dry land was when they were fleeing from Rameses’ Egyptians. (Ex. 14)
(6) Egypt was the place that there was a showdown between Moses’ God and Egypt’s magicians in Pharoah’s court. Moses’ rod became a snake and the Egyptian magician’s rods became snakes. Moses’ snake ate up all the other snakes. (See Ex. 7)
(7) The ten plagues that afflicted Pharoah and his people was in Egypt. (See Ex. 7-12)
(8) Moses grew up as an Egyptian and was educated as one. (Acts 7:22)
(9) When the Bible writer wanted to show how brilliant Solomon was he said in 1 Kings 4:30 “And Solomon‘s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt.”
(10) When Baby Jesus’ life was threatened an angel told Joseph and Mary to carry Him to Egypt, which is part of Africa, to be safe. The Bible says in Matt. 2:13 “And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.”
