What Happens When a Person Dies? Part One of Four
The Devil has spread the universal lie that man does not really die and he has done this since the beginning of the world:
“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:” (Gen. 3:4)
God alone has immortality.
If man went to Heaven, Hell, purgatory or was reincarnated when he died he would not really be dead. It would mean that whatever happened to him he would be immortal. What does the Bible say about immortality? After speaking of God as the King of Kings Paul says of God:
“Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.” (1 Tim. 6:16)
Death in the Bible is called a sleep.
1 Kings 2:10 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.
1 Kings 11:21 And when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, and that Joab the captain of the host was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, Let me depart, that I may go to mine own country.
1 Kings 11:43 And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.1 Kings 14:20 And the days which Jeroboam reigned were two and twenty years: and he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his stead.
1 Kings 14:31 And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess. And Abijam his son reigned in his stead.
1 Kings 15:8 And Abijam slept with his fathers; and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead.
1 Kings 15:24 And Asa slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead.
When Lazarus died, how did Jesus refer to his death?
“11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. 12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.” (John 11:11-14)
How is Stephen’s death referred to?
“And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.” (Acts 7:60)
Man’s spirit is only God’s breath. It is not the man in spirit form.
Gen. 2:7 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Note: God’s breath [Man’s spirit] + Man’s body [his soul] = living soul or person.
Eccles. 12:7 “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”
It is the “breath” or “spirit” that returns to God, not the person. The following text clarifies that:
“His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.” (Psa. 146:4).
Note that the text says that while man’s breath goes forth the man himself returns to the earth not goes to Heaven.
